Getting around

Fordwater is 5 minutes drive from Woking town centre. If you like to build some exercise in to your day, you can cycle (10mins) or walk (30 mins) off road the whole way along the Basingstoke Canal towpath which takes you direct from St John's to Woking town centre. If you don't have a bike, we have a few that we can lend out. If you are in a hurry there is a shorter road route (25 mins walk) or we can arrange a taxi to collect you at a discounted rate

Woking is just 25 minutes from Waterloo mainline station in London and trains run very frequently. A coach service runs from Heathrow Airport to Woking/Woking to Heathrow every 30 minutes and Gatwick Airport can be reached by train.

Woking is 10 to 15 minutes from the M25 and M3 and well connected to many other major roads, giving access to the rest of the country.


Woking is in the heart of Surrey and you are never far from beautiful country side which makes it a perfect base for walks or cycle rides. These can be reached by car, bus or train and we can lend you books of walks and cycle rides.

If you are treating yourself to one of the popular excursions a Cathedrals Express steam train trip, then why not make it 'extra special' by arriving the evening before and staying with us? No need to get up early to catch your train: you can have a relaxing breakfast and then we will drop you off at the station in plenty of time to catch your train. There are lots of trips planned over the next few months.

If you don't fancy getting the car out, it is possible to cycle or walk from Woking to beautiful countryside. You can follow the Basingstoke Canal, the Wey Navigation and then along the Thames into the centre of London without having to touch a road. From there you can get the train back from Waterloo or cycle back again! There are pubs along the way, so if you don't fancy the 40 miles to London, you can cycle of more modest distance to The Anchor or The New Inn, or take a picnic and stop by one of the picturesque locks. We can provide the picnic and are happy to advise you on routes to take and have walked and cycled them all ourselves, to we have a good idea of what each entails.

There are plenty of attractions in easy distance of Woking. RHS Wisley Gardens and Thorpe Park are within 5 miles; Hampton Court, Windsor Castle, Ascot, Kempton Park, Sandown Park and Epsom race courses, Boxhill, Chessington World of Adventure, Claremont Gardens and Painshill Park are all within half an hour's easy drive. You can be in the centre of London in 25 minutes by train and the South Coast is about an hour's drive, or you can take the train.

If you fancy an evening out Woking also has an excellent cinema multiplex and two theatres. The main theatre has the largest stage area in the country which is suitable for the most ambitious productions: musicals, ballets, operas, and ice shows as well as plays. Productions often appear in Woking before moving up to start their London run. There is also a theatre in Guildford which can be reached easily by car or train.

If you enjoy golf, then your are spoilt for choise. As well as Woking Golf Course just opposite Fordwater, there are many others (Chobham, Worplesdon, Sutton Green, West Hill, and Hoebridge Golf Centre) within a few minutes drive.


Woking has a good shopping centre which is under cover and has all the usual chain stores as well as some more specialist shops. There is a market areas and plenty of places to eat and drink. Guildford shopping centre is larger and can be reached easily by a 10 minute train journey or a 15 minute drive. If you want more, then London is only 25 minutes away with its large and diverse shopping areas.
